Why AT&T’s doesn’t worry about losing the iPhone

I understand that in some markets AT&T service is horrible.  I get it, you have dropped calls and you don’t get service in your house. There are some things that people are forgetting, and they are pretty big.  If you have ever used an iPhone, you should know that you can call and use data at the same time.  I personally use this all the time, and it is a very useful feature of the service.  Apple expanding to Verizon will remove this feature since CDMA doesn’t allow for this functionality.  If you are okay with doing one thing at a time, like getting a call and then hanging up to look something up only to call the person back, then fine.  I on the other hand like the convenience of checking traffic or getting reservations while I am on the phone with someone.  I like going to Wikipedia to prove my friend wrong.  I do understand that the network is hammered because of this two-way feature, but try it once and tell me it’s not a great feature.  Apple has also advertised the two-way thing, and you know how they are about their marketing strategies.  Oh, and please don’t think that T-Mobile is the answer, they would crumble immediately if they got the iPhone.  So, this is why AT&T has little to worry about when it comes to losing exclusivity.  The phone won’t be as cool if it did, unless Apple buys T-Mobile.  Hmmm…

Why you’re awesome: Molly Wood of CNET

If you don’t know who Molly Wood is, where the hell have you been?  Go read about her now! you need to Thank you CNET for giving Molly Wood a platform for common sense.  I have been a CNET podcast listener for some time now and I am a big fan of Buzz Out Loud (BOL).  If you don’t know what that podcast is, you have no idea what technology news is about.

Anyway, Molly Wood and the BOL crew are very good at taking a ton of legalese and murky business logic and turning it into English.  Even better, Molly is great at ranting about stupid business decisions and I have to take some time out to say Amen!  In Episode 1221 she went off on Facebook and their stupid privacy changes.  I have a problem with Facebook’s practices as well, but that will be a later post.  Here, I just want to give Molly Wood some props and spread the word about CNET’s podcast.  Rock on!

Why you’re dumb: Porn industry trying to stop piracy

Hello internets, oh and hello porn stars. If you haven’t had the chance to see the following video, please take some time to enjoy it. These guys spent some good time getting these PSA performers and directors to not look shady. Notice the lack of make-up and the toned down glossy lipstick.

Okay, I understand that people are stealing their content. I also understand that they work hard for the money. Here’s the thing, you guys will never be able to stop people from pirating your videos. Sure you can stop making the videos, but who cares? There are tons of videos online already, and at this point what are you going to do for money outside of porn? What kind of threat is that? The videos are on the internet! They are nothing more than bytes getting pushed around. If someone has it, someone else can get it easily. Who needs new material, it’s not like new material makes this kind of entertainment useful.

Let’s talk cash now, how much does the average porn chick make off of a taping? A few thousand dollars per movie? How much do the guys get, a couple hundred? This really has nothing to do with the stealing issue, but the rates of pay are grossly slanted aren’t they? Regardless, you make too much off these movies for the level of product you are producing. Most of these movies start in a kitchen, a couple lines of horrible dialogue, and then lame sex with even worse sex talk. It’s pretty pathetic, and I don’t see why anyone should pay $30 bucks or more for it. If you really want people to stop stealing video, stop making them on DVDs or on the internet.

Let’s go back to the threat of stopping production of these movies. Do you realize that there are tons of amateur sites on the internet? Do you also realize that threatening to stop making movies is the emptiest threat available to you? Go ahead and stop making movies. That won’t stop free porn sites from popping up with old content repurposed for the web. Maybe you should change the business model slightly. How about talking to your clientele in different ways? No, not on Twitter. Maybe instead of the lame self-promotion and vapid conversations you should be more engaged.

Yea, you’re right, it probably won’t help. One more thing, why did you pick the uglier porn chicks for the PSA? And why do porn directors look so creepy?

Why you’re dumb: Anyone who buys a 3D TV

I don’t know why companies are spending so much time trying to push 3D on people. Since Avatar came out this movement to 3D has been quite potent. Unfortunately, there are way too many problems with 3D for it to be a viable platform for people. Manufacturers can hope and pray that early adopters spend the cash, but I doubt that will happen, especially at the current prices of these televisions.

Where should I begin here? Oh, I know, these televisions don’t bring anything to the party in the way of features. Most of these devices are basic televisions and since 3D content isn’t prevalent it’s not worth the money when people already have working televisions. You also have to take into account that 3D is a cinematic gimmick. If you have ever watched a 3D film you know that fact, it is a gimmick.

Some people can’t see in 3D, so that segment of the population is not going to want to buy these things. Can you imagine the annoyance when someone gets bombarded with 3D messaging and they can’t see it? Way to piss off even more people guys.

Finally, the good stuff. These televisions don’t normally come with glasses. The glasses are usually over $100 bucks, so you can imagine what that bill will look like when you have more than 2 people in a family. On top of this, what if you have a viewing party? Are you supposed to buy glasses for everyone coming? What about the fact that these glasses don’t work for different manufacturers? Picture this, your friend has a Samsung and you have a Panasonic. You’re friend comes over with his glasses and it doesn’t work. Fun times!

Stop trying to sell stupid products people.
