Does John McCain Really Want To Go There?
Sarah Palin has not only been pushing Obama’s association with William Ayers, but she has also mentioned Rev. Wright this week. There are indications that John McCain may bring up Rev. Wright himself soon. Why are these accusations okay for the McCain campaign to make while they have their own issues that are not being spoken about?
What about John McCain’s relationship with Pastor John Hagee? Pastor Hagee endorsed John McCain’s candidacy and John McCain was proud of this endorsement. Here are some of Pastor Hagee’s beliefs:
- “All hurricanes are acts of God because God controls the heavens. I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God and they were recipients of the judgment of God for that.” [NPR Fresh Air, 9/18/06]
- “Do you know the difference between a woman with PMS and a snarling Doberman pinscher? The answer is lipstick. Do you know the difference between a terrorist and a woman with PMS? You can negotiate with a terrorist.” [God's Profits: Faith, Fraud and the Republican Crusade for Values Voters, Sarah Posner]
- Fresh Air host Terry Gross asked if Hagee believed that “all Muslims have a mandate to kill Christians and Jews,” to which Hagee replied, “Well, the Quran teaches that. Yes, it teaches that very clearly.” [NPR Fresh Air, 9/18/06]
- “Then god sent a hunter. A hunter is someone with a gun and he forces you. Hitler was a hunter. And the Bible says — Jeremiah writing — ‘They shall hunt them from every mountain and from every hill and from the holes of the rocks,’ meaning there’s no place to hide. And that might be offensive to some people but don’t let your heart be offended. I didn’t write it, Jeremiah wrote it. It was the truth and it is the truth. How did it happen? Because God allowed it to happen. Why did it happen? Because God said my top priority for the Jewish people is to get them to come back to the land of Israel.”
- “Most readers will be shocked by the clear record of history linking Adolf Hitler and the Roman Catholic Church in a conspiracy to exterminate the Jews.” [Jerusalem Countdown by John Hagee]
John McCain later said of Pastor Hagee and his beliefs: “I don’t have to agree with everyone who endorses my candidacy. They are supporting my candidacy. I am not endorsing some of their positions.”
What about John McCain’s relationship with Pastor Rod Parsley? John McCain appeared at a campaign rally with Pastor Parsley and said that he was “one of the truly great leaders in America, a moral compass, a spiritual guide.” Here are some of Pastor Parsley’s beliefs:
- called Islam “the greatest religious enemy of our civilization and the world,” claiming that the historic mission of America is to see “this false religion destroyed.”
- “I must state three important truths…No. 1, the God of Christianity and the God of Islam are two separate beings…Mr. Bush, I support you. You need to stop saying that the God of Islam and the God of Christianity are the same God…No. 2, Muhammad received revelations from demon spirits, not from the living God. No. 3, Islam is an anti-Christ religion that intends, through violence, to conquer the world. Did you get those three truths?”
John McCain actively sought the endorsement of Pastor Parsley for political reasons. Initially, John McCain’s campaign refused to comment on Pastor Parsley’s anti-Islamic statements and John McCain would not denounce Pastor Parsley’s beliefs. Ultimately, John McCain did reject Pastor Parsley’s endorsement. However, the damage was done since John McCain sought out this endorsement to help him win Ohio.
What about John McCain’s relationship with John Singlaub? John Singlaub founded the U.S. Council for World Freedom. John McCain was not only a member of this group, he was also on the board of directors for this group. John Singlaub said that the USCWF would provide “support and assistance to the democratic, anti-communist Freedom Fighters of the world” by engaging in unconventional warfare that he described as “low intensity actions, such as sabotage, terrorism, assassination and guerrilla warfare.”
John McCain left this group sometime between 1984 and 1986. Coincidentally, his resignation from the group came during his political campaigns.
I’ve tried to focus on John McCain since he is at the top of the Republican ticket; however, Sarah Palin has her own issues too. Such as, her husband’s, Todd Palin’s, membership in the Alaskan Independence Party, Pastor Thomas Muthee (video), and the Wasilla Bible Church.
Barack Obama has denounced the acts of William Ayers and the statements of Rev. Wright, but apparently what works for the white politician does not work for the half white/half black politician.
